Know Your Rights

As a classified employee of Mt. SAC, you have many rights protected not only by your collective bargaining agreement negotiated with the District but also by numerous laws, including the California Education Code, Welfare & Institutions Code, Government Code, and many others. These rights are a foundation upon which CSEA Chapter 262 has negotiated your contract. Additional rights, though not formally negotiated, may be granted by local school district policy or binding memorandums of understanding (MOU) between CSEA and Mt. SAC.
While your Chapter 262 has negotiated certain rights on your behalf, it is important employees Know Your Rights. Only if you know your rights as an employee can you protect yourself in the workplace, and CSEA cannot assist you unless you make your Chapter leaders aware of possible contract violations or workplace conditions. The enforcement of collective bargaining agreements and MOUs is under the direct control of you and your CSEA Chapter 262, and is generally more timely, decisive, and relevant – especially if the contractual grievance procedure culminates with final and binding arbitration by an impartial third party.
The body of law pertaining to your rights is immense, and all cannot be listed or described on these pages. However, here are many of the most common and basic rights. Please use this Know Your Rights web site to familiarize yourself with your basic rights as an employee. If you have a concern about any issue, contact your Chapter Job Steward or any Chapter Leader immediately. Remember, CSEA works for you to protect your rights.
