Make Your Voice Heard

ChapterElections2020.png

The race to the White House may be over, but there are still elections coming up.  No, the presidential election is not getting a “do over,” but your Chapter 262 will be seeking nominations for Chapter officers to be elected in December.

In December,  Chapter 262 will hold elections for the offices of Chapter President, 2nd Vice Preisdent, Treasurer, and Communications Officer.  Nominations for these offices will be held next week at the next Chapter meeting.

Nominees who accept the nominations will then be put on the ballot for the December election.  If only one candidate accepts for a position, then no election will be necessary and that candidate is elected.

Please attend the November Chapter meeting next week to nominate a unit member whom you believe would make a good Chapter Officer — including yourself!  The date and time for the election will be announced at the Chapter meeting.

2020 has been a memorable year for many reasons.  Let our Chapter end the year on a positive note of continuing the terrific work this year’s Chapter Leadership has done for you, the members, by electing officers who will continue this good work next year.

Welcome to Mt. SAC: New Classified Professionals

At the November 4 Board of Trustees meeting, the college welcomed these new or promoted classified employees:

Permanent New Hires

  • Briseida Maciel, Student Services Program Specialist II (Student Services)

  • Elizabeth Mahler, Coordinator, Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ACCESS)

  • Tiffany Rusich, Administrative Specialist II (Continuing Ed)

During our current telecommuting period, send an e-mail and welcome them to Mt. SAC.  Extend a warm welcome, invite them to a Zoom lunch or to lunch when we all return, and, if they work in your area or near you, make them feel welcome.  Invite them to and encourage them to attend the next “virtual” Chapter meeting so they can introduce themselves.

A Message from Your CSEA President

Ben Valdepena, President California School Employees Association

Hello fellow brothers and sisters,

Breathe in. And now, take a well-deserved breath out. That is the welcome sigh of relief that comes after months and months of a contentious election cycle, no matter what side you stood for in the races and ballot measures. There is no doubt it was a critical election; possibly the most important one in our lifetime. Now, it is time to look ahead, but I cannot do so myself without first looking back and thanking all of those who volunteered on behalf of CSEA in this year’s efforts.

It is because of the thousands of you who volunteered—through phone banking, texting campaigns, targeted races and more—that we were able to see most of our CSEA-endorsed candidates succeed. From the top of the ballot on down, pro-labor candidates were elected to the presidency, Congress, the state legislature and school boards. Putting these elected officials in place is important as it will make a huge difference for all CSEA members, knowing that they will be represented and recognized for the critical role they play in their students’ education.

Here are some of our huge wins in the legislature:

  • Senate District 5, Susan Eggman

  • Senate District 15, Dave Cortese

  • Senate District 29, Josh Newman

  • Senate District 37, Dave Min

  • Assembly District 59, Reggie Jones-Sawyer

Make no mistake, the efforts of CSEA members made a huge difference in these races and, in fact, was the deciding factor in many. Thank you for being a part of these historic efforts, without which we wouldn’t have succeeded. For that, we should all be extremely proud.

In Solidarity,
