Dear Stew,
I am so excited about working 32 hours a week in the summer! I am just not sure I really understand how it will work for me and my manager. Additionally, I have two part-time classified employees in my area, one 47% and one 80%. How will this work for them?
Thanks!!

Dear Summer Dreamer,
Thanks for your question. I am sure you are not the only one wondering about how all this is going to work. For you, as a 40-hour-a-week employee, the answer is very simple. You will report to work for eight hours each day, Monday through Thursday. If that schedule does not work for your situation, you can agree to a different arrangement with your manager and vice president. There are several options including, working all 40 hours each week and then receiving the 64 hours of summer schedule leave as a floating holiday once the summer is completed, or keeping the summer schedule time off per week, but finding an alternate schedule that works for you (for example, maybe you work 6.5 hours Tuesday-Friday and 6 hours on Saturday). The important thing is, you no longer need to reserve any leave to pay for your portion of the ten-hour day. In essence, the District will be footing the bill for all 64 hours needed over the 8 weeks to allow us to work only 8 hours a day, 4 days a week. So, you will not need to provide 16 hours of leave to enjoy fewer hours of work in the summer! As for your part-time pals, the 47% employee will receive about 30 hours of floating holiday hours to use within the next 12 months, but only after the summer is completed. The 80% employee will also receive a pro-rated number of floating holiday hours (51.2) to use once the summer schedule is completed.
I hope this helps, and go ahead and start making your summer Friday plans!
-Stew
