Rizz the Grizz Embraces Wellness Time at Mt. SAC


As many of us are far too familiar with, in today’s fast-paced work environment, finding a balance between productivity and personal well-being can feel like a daunting task. That’s why Mt. San Antonio College and CSEA 262 are proud to announce their support to employees through our newly enhanced On-Campus Wellness Time Policy. This initiative reflects our commitment to supporting not only the physical health of our chapter but also their mental, emotional, and social well-being.

What exactly is Wellness Time?  Built into an agreement between Mt. San Antonio College and CSEA Chapter 262 -– Tentative Agreement #6 Article 10: Hours of Work and Related Matters Wellness Time –- is a policy that allows unit members the ability to dedicate up to 30 minutes per day for wellness activities right on campus. Intentionally embracing your time for self-care, whether it’s enjoying a walk outdoors, practicing mindfulness, stretching at our state-of-the-art wellness center, or meeting with an Employee Counseling Center (ECC) counselor. 

By far, flexibility is one of its biggest strengths. Employees can use various types of accrued leave — including vacation, compensatory time, floating holiday hours, additional sick leave, or personal necessity leave -– for these wellness breaks. A caveat to mention is that district approval is needed before use.  Unit members can seamlessly add time to their lunch or rest period to create a longer wellness window during the workday.  Article 10.14.3 notably mentions any members seeking appointments with our ECC may be granted additional wellness time to attend approved appointments. There’s no need to worry; this process is confidential, with only approved times being communicated to supervisors. Allowing use of this fantastic facility and access to support without worry or stigma. 

Now more than ever, self-care isn’t just an idea but an essential need. Research has consistently shown incorporating brief wellness breaks throughout our day can significantly improve focus, reduce stress, and enhance overall job satisfaction. We recognize personal wellness equips us to better support our students and colleagues and builds a stronger campus community. 

How do you use your wellness time? The possibilities are endless. The first step is to check your eligibility and see if time accrual is available. The next steps are getting district approval and scheduling your wellness. Take a brisk walk across Miracle Mile or our many beautiful campus trails. Join a colleague for a midday break. Take advantage of our many stimulating fitness classes at our wellness center. Spend a few minutes journaling, meditating, or listening to a riveting podcast. Take advantage of the professional resources through our ECC and schedule a confidential session where you can talk about personal or workplace challenges. Whatever your approach may be, the goal is simple: take time to restore, reconnect, and return to your workday refreshed.
